Hydromatt Solar Pool Heating

The great success of the AMR Hydromatt solar system is due to the solar collector's high efficiency. No other flexible strip absorber system is designed like it, or can heat your pool so efficiently. The matt black material used in the system is superior to the plastics and PVCs used by other manufacturers. Technically speaking, it is called EPHL, a synthetic hydrocarbon rubber developed by AMR. It is unbreakable, can't freeze, won't rust, chip, crack, warp or corrode and has a life expectancy, in operation, of around 25 to 30 years.

This new compound E.P.H.L. is virtually immune to ultraviolet radiation and ozone, it is dimensionally stable over a wide temperature range and is highly resistant to pool chemicals or additives. It has all the inherent properties of the earlier E.P.D.M. with an even higher operating temperature range (-40 to 140 deg C) which is particularly important with todays more efficient collector designs. It also has newly developed inhibitors incorporated into the formulation to stop any growth of micro organisms.

The average mass per unit area is very low, so all types of roofing surfaces are suitable for installing this type of solar heating collector. On metal roofs the collector is usually strapped down and' also glued, and on tiled roofs colorbond clips are used as well as the collector glue. In the southern states a north or west facing roof is found to perform best, and northern roofs work best further north.

How does the HYDROMATT Solar System work?
HYDROMATT Solar is a superior and perfectly tailored solar pool heating system which is custom fitted to your roof so as to be aesthetically appealing, unobtrusive and almost undetectable.

By pumping your pool water through a HYDROMATT Solar collector fixed to your roof, and then back to your pool, the solar energy collected by the absorber is transferred to the pool water in the form of heat during its journey, and this warms your pool water by up to 10 degrees.

Why use a HYDROMATT Solar System to heat your pool?
The great success of the HYDROMATT Solar System is due to the solar collector's high efficiency. No other flexible strip absorber system is designed like it, or can heat your pool so efficiently.

HYDROMATT Solar Collectors have been manufactured since the early seventies. These Solar Collectors are extruded in a modern factory using the most up to date hi-tech equipment available in the world. All the polymers are compounded and mixed on the premises to maintain the highest quality products available on the Australian market.

How long will a HYDROMATT Solar System last?
The HYDROMATT Collector is virtually immune to ultraviolet radiation and ozone, it is dimensionally stable over a wide temperature range and is highly resistant to pool chemicals or additives and expected to last on a roof for approximately 25-30 years.

Is the system automatic?
Due to the great efficiency of HYDROMATT Solar collectors, the solar system should be automatically controlled to avoid overheating, or cooling of your pool during bad weather. The controller will automatically turn the system on or off depending on when there is heat to be gained, and you can preset a water temperature to suit your own preference.
Fully automatic digital and non-digital automatic control systems are available, depending on your individual requirements and budget.

Does it work on cloudy days?
Yes, some energy is available even on cloudy days. The HYDROMATT Solar absorber provides maximum surface area to catch and retain that energy.

Is my roof suitable?
The average mass per unit roof area is very low. Tile, metal, fibro, corrugated iron and most other roofing surfaces are suitable. Flat, or the northerly or westerly surface of a sloping roof is usually best.

Do I need a pool cover?
Yes. If you wish to swim in the cooler months. To efficiently heat any body of water the natural losses should be minimised - boiling an open pan on the stove wastes a lot of energy without using the lid.

Can I use my existing filtration system?
Yes the A.M.R. SOLAR SYSTEM will generally work with your existing pool filter and pump whatever type it is, and it only takes 1-2 days to completely install. Automatic systems have proven to give consistently much better heating results than those run manually, or from a timeclock

Is there enough solar energy to really heat all the water in my pool?
The C.S.I.R.O.'s Division of Mechanical Engineering has studied this application extensively. Their Technical Report entitled "Swimming Pool Heating by Solar Energy" states that since outside the normal swimming season there are lengthy periods when the outside air temperatures during the day are quite high enough for comfortable swimming, the swimming season can be extended simply by increasing the water temperature to a suitable level. Solar energy is particularly suitable for this application because heating to a relatively low temperature results in a high efficiency of solar energy collection, and a!so relatively low-cost solar collectors.
The heavy duty A.M.R. HYDROMATT E.P.H.L. solar absorber material has a guarantee of 10 years against U.V. degradation.

Marcoola Resort - Solar on Tile Roof
For tiled roofs or highly visible roofs, solazone uses the flattened-tube rubber strip system called Hydromatt.

The 165 mm wide collector strips consist of ten flattened 6mm tubes joined together to create a mat.

Two strips of collector fit perfectly on a row of tiles, giving the effect of complete coverage of the tiled roof.

As the Hydromatt solar system relies on the sun's energy, quite naturally average pool temperatures are going to vary with the weather. To give you some idea, compare the effect of the sun heating a locked car in the shopping centre carpark, on a sunny or a cloudy day. An average daytime result is based on variations of absorber area related to your pool's surface area. Solar contribution is viable with a Hydromatt solar system collector area covering a roof space from as little as 60% of your pool's surface area. We would recommend at least the same area as that of the swimming pool for the best results, combined with an automatic temperature control system that allows you to set and maintain the desired pool temperature.
