CLASSIC 1000 | CLASSIC 750 | WEEKENDER | COMPACT

NATURE LOO CLASSIC 1000

The Classic is the standard composting toilet system for domestic installations. Since its development in 1992 thousands have been sold all over Australia. Its strengths are its simplicity, minimum maintenance and intervention requirements, and its unlimited capacity with the purchase of additional chambers. Most importantly, it is by far the lowest priced family composting toilet on the market.
Included in the standard Classic 1000/2 package are:-
  • Hand made traditional warm white ceramic pedestal, with honey oak wooden seat.
  • 2 large composting chambers (850 mm high x 800 mm maximum diameter).
  • Waste connecting chute (700 mm long - can be cut to suit your requirements).
  • Vent cap and moisture trap.
  • 12 volt 3 watt fan in housing, plus flexible connecting hose and insect screen.
  • Regulated transformer for providing 12 volt power to the fan from the mains.
  • Detailed, easy to follow installation and maintenance manual.
  • Starter kit packets of mushroom mulch and sugar cane straw.

The Classic 1000/2 comes complete with everything required for installation, except for the vent pipe and absorption trench materials, which can be bought locally from a hardware or garden supplies shop.
The Classic 1000/3 package includes all components of the Classic 1000/2 package, plus an extra composting chamber for larger families and cooler locations.

OPTIONS: (Available at no extra cost when ordered with your system)
Pedestal: The ceramic pedestal can be exchanged for the more hard wearing white resin pedestal.
EXTRAS:
Waste Chute: Depending on the height of your toilet room you may need a longer chute than the standard 700 mm. Extra Lengths are available.

Classic 1000 Prices

The Nature-Loo CLASSIC 1000/2 package - is designed for permanent installation in homes, however it is also a good choice for commercial installations. Your choice of handmade ceramic pedestal or the more hardy polymeric pedestal (same great look, more durable material), and wooden toilet seat. A waste chute (700 mm long - can be cut by you to suit your requirements) joins the pedestal to the composting chamber beneath the toilet room floor. The package includes a second chamber, a 12 volt 3 watt fan plus flexible connecting hose, vent cap and insect screen. It also comes with a regulated transformer for providing 12 volt power to the fan from the mains.
Fill one chamber (a couple will take a little less than a year to fill one), then replace it with the second chamber, and allow the full one to continue composting, outside in the sun. A squirt of enzymes, or a handful of worms, greatly speeds up the decomposition process.

NATURE LOO CLASSIC 750

The Classic 750 is the newest member of the Nature-loo range and is very popular with smaller family units.
It is similar to the Classic 1000 with its attractive clean white pedestal and seat, but has shorter, more compact, composting chambers, requiring reduced (750 mm) under-floor chamber space. We've produced this one after having made up several custom orders for folks who loved the design of the Classic, but didn't have enough space beneath the toilet room floor to accommodate the Classic 1000 chamber.
The Classic 750 range comes complete with everything required for installation except for the vent pipe and absorption trench materials, which can be obtained from most hardware or garden shops.
Included in the standard Classic 750/2 Package:
  • Hand made bright white hard-wearing pedestal and wooden seat.
  • 2 medium-sized composting chambers (750 mm high x 650 mm diameter).
  • Waste connecting chute (70 cm long - can be cut to suit your requirements).
  • Vent cap and moisture trap.
  • 12 volt 2.8 watt fan and housing, plus connecting flexible hose and insect screen.
  • Regulated transformer for providing 12 volt power to the fan from the mains.
  • Detailed, easy to follow installation and maintenance manual.

The way Nature-Loo works is incredibly simple.
The interesting part is why it works.

Moisture

The moisture content of a compost pile is very important. Below 40%, organic matter will tend to dry out and not decompose rapidly. Over about 60%, not enough air can get into the pile and it can become anaerobic (no oxygen).

A moisture content of approximately 50% is ideal for composting. Nature- Loo maintains this optimum condition in two ways. First, the liquid waste (urine) is separated from solid waste immediately by displacing it through a perforated floor into the liquid chamber. This prevents the process from becoming saturated, and anaerobic.

Secondly, the semi-sealed nature of the chamber tends to keep the humidity high. That high humidity ensures that the compost pile maintains an optimum level of moisture.

Oxygen
Micro-organisms that require oxygen to survive are called aerobes. Organic materials are decomposed most rapidly by aerobes ~ much more rapidly than the anaerobes used in septic systems.

Aerobes need many cubic metres of oxygen each day for rapid breakdown. A small 12 volt ventilation fan in the Nature-Loo supplies up to 420 litres of air per minute, more than enough to keep the process going at optimum levels. This has the added advantage of acting as a highly efficient extractor fan to remove any rising odours from the toilet room.

Temperature
The heat coming from piles of organic material is generated by the feeding and multiplication of millions of micro-organisms. Technically, the stage of the temperature cycle below 40 degrees C is termed mesophilic. Above 40 degrees C is the thermophilic.

Composting is most rapid in the thermophilic stage. As the temperature rises over 40 degrees C, mesophilic organisms die out and are replaced by an upsurge in the population of thermophilic organisms - the agents of fastest decomposition.

Later, as the temperature drops, mesophilic organisms re-invade the centre of the pile from the cooler outer layer.

Nature-Loo functions well in both thermophilic and mesophilic stages, but in most cases it operates in the faster, thermophilic stage. This happens for a couple of reasons ~

    1. Air is drawn into the Nature-Loo through the toilet pedestal. As the air inside a house is usually warmer than the air outside, the Nature-Loo chamber is also kept warmer. In colder climates, the chamber may also be insulated with thermal insulation material, to help retain warmth.

    2. The storage containers are black. This means they are an excellent absorber of heat, especially if located in natural sunlight.

Pathogens
An important function of the composting process is the destruction of pathogens. Most are killed in the thermophilic stage. Composting at temperatures above 55 degrees C for 1 day kills almost all pathogens.

As the Nature-Loo chamber is in use for around 9 months, and is composting by itself for another 9 months, there is little chance of any pathogens surviving, even if the composting process doesn't reach the thermophilic stage. In addition, our unique use of isolated batch chambers ensures no recontamination from fresh waste.

A typical analysis of the humus from a Nature-Loo shows no traces of Faecal Streptococci, Faecal Coliforms or Salmonella spores.

Worms
Worms aren't a necessity, but used in the 'out-of-service' chamber only, they can also play an important role in the function of a Nature-Loo. By tunnelling through the compost pile, worms increase the availability of oxygen and the compost pile's ability to retain moisture. They also produce benevolent bacteria in such overwhelming numbers that disease producing bacteria find life extremely difficult.

The most common 'composting' worms are the Red, Tiger, and Blue Worms. All are ferocious eaters and rapid breeders. All are commonly available from most nurseries.

Worms eat up to their own body weight each day. Their by-products are called vermicast. Vermicast is an excellent fertiliser for plants - better than pure humus and it, too, is quite free of pathogens.

A worm population can double in 7 - 8 weeks. This means that their processing of the contents of the chamber increases exponentially. When their food supply declines, the population diminishes, leaving a chamber full of vermicast. If there are any worms left alive, they can be transferred to the next chamber or put into the ground as a soil improver.

Worms survive best in moisture and pH levels very similar to those ideal for composting. The only difference is their preferred habitat temperature of 20 - 30 degrees C.

Above and below this range, the action of the worms will slow down until optimum conditions return.

Now, recall that as temperature rises over 40 degrees C., the number of thermophilic organisms increases rapidly and continue the rapid breakdown of the compost pile in the Nature-Loo.

So, regardless of temperature, an ideal symbiotic relationship between macro-organisms (worms) and micro-organisms ensures that the Nature-Loo works to absolute maximum efficiency.

REMEMBER: WE RECOMMEND USING WORMS IN THE
    "OUT-OF-SERVICE" (OR FULL) CHAMBER ONLY.

Nature-Flush Enzymes - Supercharge your toilet

By using our Nature-Flush enzymes you can increase the efficiency of your toilet, making it work faster in adverse conditions, controlling stray odours and increasing the capacity by speeding up the composting process. You can add the enzymes manually with a hand held domestic spray flask or with a micro dosing pump kit which produces an evenly distributed spray directly onto the contents of the chamber. If you like the idea of "flushing" after "toileting" we recommend using a Flush Kit. If you plan to power your toilet using low rated solar power or wind power we particularly recommend the use of enzymes.

FLUSH MODELS: To speed up composting and reduce the amount of odour being dissipated from the vent pipe you can add enzymes to the chamber. In the case of the Compact toilet you can either add these manually using a hand held domestic spray flask or by purchasing our micro dosing pump kit which produces an evenly distributed spray directly onto the contents of the chamber. In the case of the Classic and Ensuite toilets it is more effective to use the pump kit due to the inaccessibility of the chamber with a hand held spray flask. If you like the idea of ‘flushing’ after ‘toileting’ we recommend the Flush models. Please note the flushing only involves biodegradable enzymes and not water. The kits contain a micro flush foot pump, storage container, pipes, nozzles and enough enzyme concentrate for 4000 flushes.

Ventilation and Fans

Air flow is essential to the composting process.
To prevent odours, and maximise the composting / breakdown process, you must ensure that the 12 volt fan is running 24 hours a day.
Over 24 hours, the fan uses as much power as a 60 watt light bulb uses in one hour.
If the fan isn’t running, you can expect to experience odours.
There are various ways of getting power to run the fan on a Nature Loo...

Powering Your Fan

1. Mains Powered Dwelling

If your property is supplied with mains electricity, then it is a simple matter of plugging the 12 volt transformer into a power point and connecting it to the fan.
In case of mains power failure, you may care to have a 12 volt battery available as a back-up.

Solazone produce the Nature-loo UPS system, to keep the Nature-loo ventilated even if the mains power shuts down. It plugs into the power point, and provides reliable 12 volt power for your fan. It is fully fuse-protected, and uses a 7 amp-hr sealed lead acid battery.
Price : $ 155 plus postage

2. Solar Powered Dwelling

If your house is powered by solar panels, you will have a battery bank - generally either 12 or 24 volt DC. If you have a 12 volt system, just connect the battery directly to the fan. Don’t forget to put a 1 amp fuse in line to the fan. If you have a 24 volt system, we can supply you with a 24 volt fan. If your battery bank is other than 12 or 24 volt, we have dc-dc converters that will allow you to run the fan directly from your battery bank.

The 12 volt fan will use about 6 amp-hours of power, and the 24 volt fan about half of this.

Sizing your Solar Panel & Battery

S.E.Queensland: A 20 watt solar panel connected to a special regulator and 12 volt 33 Ahr sealed lead acid battery should give continuous power to the fan, even during poor weather. This system should power the fan for up to 4 - 5 days of inclement weather. Beyond this, the battery charge level will diminish and the fan may eventually shut down. If this is a concern you may wish to purchase a bigger solar panel and battery.

Victoria: A 30 watt solar panel connected to a special regulator and 12 volt 33 Ahr sealed lead acid battery should give continuous power to the fan, even during poor weather. This system should power the fan for up to 4 - 5 days of inclement weather. Beyond this, the battery charge level will diminish and the fan may eventually shut down. If this is a concern you may wish to purchase a bigger solar panel and battery.

If you have no electrical power you can move air through the system with a whirly-bird-type ventilator placed on top of your vent pipe. This is much less effective than an electrically-powered fan. The wind-powered ventilator will not normally draw at wind speeds below about 5 km/hr

If you already have 24 volt batteries for your solar power system, we can provide 24 volt fans instead of 12 volt, at no extra cost.

Ventilating the out-of-service Chamber

A flow of air is needed for the out-of-service chamber to compost. This can be achieved by placing the chamber outside in the sun, and providing power to an extra fan. If the chamber is to be placed outside and mains power is not available, we recommend that you employ one or more of the following methods…

Whirly-birds or wind-assisted-ventilators. These terrific silent, plastic ventilators come complete with a special adaptor to allow it to fit a 100mm vent pipe. ($155)

Attaching a black painted vent pipe which will heat the air and cause it to rise and air to flow.

Using a 5 watt solar panel connected directly to the spare fan. This panel will allow the fan to slowly turn over the air in the chamber, to ensure complete digestion of the contents.

Out-of-service Classic storage tanks already come with a wind-assisted aerator. These may be purchased and fitted to the Compact model as well. ($65 ea)

Fans will eventually wear out and break down. It is advisable to always have a spare fan on hand.
