Sun Lizard Solar Air Heater and Cooler

The Sun Lizard solar air heater and cooler provides free heating and cooling in an environmentally responsible way

Sunlizard has been unavailable for the past few months, but its manufacture has recommenced, and the new model has several improvements.

The unit can also be switched to "Summer Mode" which stops air circulating through the solar collector and instead pumps out the hot air from inside a building. The hot air is then replaced with cooler air from under doors, downstairs or gardens. Air near the ceiling of houses in summer can be as hot as 50 degrees Celsius, so removing this significantly reduces the need for air conditioning.

The Sun Lizard is a radical new way of heating and cooling your home. It can reduce your energy bills by as much as 60% while at the same time producing no greenhouse gas emissions. It will last in excess of 20 years with little or no maintenance and no running costs. It is installed on your roof and in most cases won't be seen from the ground. It will then quietly go about heating and cooling your house, every day of the year.

The solar collector is a typical flat plate type but with angled "fins" to allow the unit to sit flatter on a roof but still allowing maximum solar gain.  This arrangement also allow air to be passed in front and behind the heated fins increasing the surface area heating the air.  The volume of the air passage is calculated to allow for a standard 150mm heating duct to be connected to the unit and minimise any constrictions in airflow.

The solar PV panel is mounted to the Sunlizard so that anytime the sun is shining on it, the photovoltaic panel is supplying power to the fans and pumping air through the Sunlizard. The unit heats the house by sucking air out of the building, passing it through the solar collector (which can get to temperatures near 100 degrees Celsius), and back into the building. This process goes on all day, for free, while the sun is shining (even if it is overcast or cloudy).

The overall internal temperature of the building increases slowly, and the need for supplementary heating is reduced, if not entirely eliminated. A well-designed building with plenty of thermal mass and good insulation could easily be heated entirely by this system. Even in Melbourne, there are on average, approximately 4.5 hours of clear sunshine per day in winter, and rarely more than 2-3 days in a row of heavy rain and cloud.

The Sunlizard is also self-regulating. The less sun, the slower the fans, so this stops cold air being pumped into the building when the sun goes down or it becomes too cloudy.

Pay back period (worst case)

The Sun Lizard retails for about $2750 including parts. Typically installation is between $400 and $600, but can easily be done by a home handyman. If you are installing the Sun Lizard into a new home or one without existing heating or cooling, you can choose to install much smaller traditional heating and cooling systems as a backup on the days there is no sun. This will save thousands of dollars initially as well as long term running costs. If you are retrofitting to an existing home with heating and cooling already in place, the pay back period would be 10-15 years for gas (less if you factor in 3-5% inflation) and 5-7 years for electricity and wood (unless your wood is free?)

Solar heater lifespan projection and maintenance

Anticipated maintenance free lifespan of solar heater is 15-20 years as the only parts that wear out are fans with MTBF of 50,000 hours at approx 6 hours/day = 22.8 years and photovoltaic panel which may drop off in power after a few years but still function adequately for the power needed for the fans for at least 20 years. Both of these are easily replaceable. The rest is glass and colourbond so will not wear out. Heater design will allow for improvements and backward compatibility so that upgraded fans and PV panels can be fitted to older units.
