    Solving house heat problems

Over the years we have had many discussions with people who find their home to be hot and uncomfortable, and want a cooler house.   Here are is one such case that we come across and how we solved the problem:

We installed Insulation but house still gets hot

“Our whole house gets quite hot and uncomfortable, particularly in the afternoons.  We installed ceiling insulation to keep us cool, but the house still heats up and stays too hot inside the rooms.  The house is an old Queenslander type with a high-pitched metal corrugated roof.”

    Here’s what’s happening

The roof is acting like a giant solar collector, getting hot during the day, and heating up the roof space.  Even the insulation in the roof cavity resting on the ceiling is getting quite hot.  There is no airflow in the roof cavity to allow the heat out.  The built-up heat in the roof space, including the insulation, then radiates heat down into the rooms underneath all day, and even for many hours after the sun has gone down for the day.

    Our suggested solution

The obvious solution is to fit a solar roof ventilator to continuously remove the hot air from inside the roof space, starting from early morning, as the roof starts to heat up during the day.  This begins from first light in the morning.   Because the solar roof ventilator extractor fan is removing the heat all day, the roof space never gets the chance to heat up at all.  It will always remain measurably cooler in that space.  The ceiling insulation does not get the chance to get warm, and therefore it cannot radiate heat down into the rooms underneath.

Install at least four metal eave vents.

Any hot air that is removed needs to be replaced by cooler fresh air, so if the roof space is sealed up, you need to let cool replacement air in.  You can do this by installing at least four metal eave vents per solar ventilator, evenly around the perimeter of the house. This will allow cool fresh air to enter and move across the ceiling from all directions, picking up the heat, before being expelled as warm or hot air through the solar ventilator.

Solazone Solar Roof Ventilator in a 2-Storey house in Noosa Queensland

We recently installed a Solazone Solar Roof Ventilator in a 2-storey house in Noosa Queensland.  We spoke to the owner about her experience and why she decided to have one installed.

Why did you have it installed?

I have a 2-storey house and it got extremely hot especially upstairs. During the afternoon it was unbearable. I had to do something about it. I really do not like the heat, funny thing is that I live in Queensland. Most of the time it is ok, but the summer really gets hot.

    Why wasn’t Air-conditioning an option?

I already have 2 air-conditioning units one downstairs and one in my bedroom. The external units are placed in the small courtyard I have. However, the house is in close proximity with the 2 neighbouring properties, which makes it almost impossible to add another unit. Plus, they are so expensive to run adding another unit would have cost so much. So, we had to look for an alternative.

    Why Solar Roof Ventilators?

A family member suggested them to me. They said that they had searched on line for a solution and came across these Solazone Solar Roof Ventilators. So, we gave them a call.

How was your dealing with Solazone?

They were great! They explained everything to me about why the house was getting so hot. They installed the unit and explained what it would be doing. It was seamless.

    Has it made a difference?

You must understand that I really can’t handle the heat so much these days. Must be an age thing but it wears me down. At first, I really didn’t notice too much but when I had family members come over during Christmas, they all commented. One of them said that they really noticed that the upstairs was cooler, so it is starting to make a difference. I suppose you forget what it was like before and just get used to the new situation. What I do now is I have my air conditioner on in my bedroom (upstairs) and the Solazone Solar Roof Ventilator helps keep the whole area cooler.

Are you glad you put it in?

Yes, it is making a difference. What it is doing is making a really bad situation bearable. The best part is that once it is installed the Solar takes over. It costs nothing after that so that is good.

  • Solar Roof Ventilations for shared office space in Brisbane

Solar Roof Ventilations for shared office space in Brisbane

Brisbane company decide to use Solar Roof Ventilations for shared space office.

We recently installed Solar Roof Ventilators for a company in Albion, Brisbane. We spoke to the owner about the experience and what he wanted to achieve.

Why did you get Solar Roof Ventilators installed?

We run a shared office space building with a mezzanine 2nd floor. During the summer the heat becomes unbearable. As the day gets hotter so does this space. So, we have to minimise our time on the mezzanine and work downstairs. Because we are in a tin roof open warehouse situation all of the heat would stay in the upper area of the building. I had to change my shirts at least 3 times a day as I would become saturated with sweat. It was just too hot.

    The Solar Roof Ventilators

We decided to talk to Solazone about their Solar Roof Ventilators to see what they can do. If we didn’t do this, we would have to spend an exorbitant amount of money on air-conditioning just to use this space. Once installed we noticed a difference in the temperature. It felt like it dropped a few degrees, which makes it more bearable at least just to walk around in.

    The heat doesn’t build up

We found that the heat doesn’t build up anymore. It used to be that when you went up to the second floor you would be hit with a wall of heat. This does not happen anymore. We are very happy with the Solar Roof Ventilators as they allow us to at least go up to the second floor and be there for a longer period of time. So, they definitely work.

    Free, once it is installed

One of the great things was that once it is installed the Solar does all of the work. This means that there are no extra electricity costs to keep the building cooler.

How was your dealing with Solazone?

They were great, they knew what to do. The staff were pleasant and explained why the building was getting so hot. It made sense.

    Any future plans with Solar

I think we may look at getting a Solar system installed so we can start to really take advantage of the sun. It seems incredible that once the systems are installed the sun’s free energy takes over. Reduces the costs. I like that.

  • Hot House problem – easily fixed with a quality Solar Roof Ventilator

Hot House problem – easily fixed with a quality Solar Roof Ventilator

Your house sometimes gets really hot, right?

A lot of Australian homes have a problem with the roof space getting very hot during hot weather and radiating uncomfortable heat down into the living areas during the summer months. In this case it really does not matter even if you have the windows open, an air conditioner going, or fans operating, you can still feel the radiated heat coming down from the ceiling.

Where is this heat coming from?

The main cause of a house heating up is from the sun heating up the roof surface, be it concrete or terracotta tiles, slate, or metal. The roof surface radiates and conducts that heat into the roof space, where it builds up in the timber frames, the air, and anything else that is in there. We have actually measured temperatures on the roof when fitting solar panels and over 80 degrees Celsius is quite common in many places.

Enclosed Roof space gets even hotter

Because the roof space is enclosed and has very little air flow, this space gets hotter and hotter throughout the day. It is like an oven, a source of abundant heat, and nowhere for it to go. So, it just gets hotter and hotter, as the day warms up.

The problem with installed thermal insulation

Insulation is great for retaining warmth in the winter, and for keeping the heat inside the room. However, installing thermal insulation in the ceiling can only make matters worse when it comes to heat. When the roof space gets very hot, thermal insulation creates a heated barrier with hot thermal mass resting directly on the ceiling. Radiating the heat and keeping the room below quite hot.

Getting to the cause of the Hot House problem

What is happening is that the sun beams down on the roof all day. You can check inside your own roof space by opening the manhole in the ceiling, and popping your head inside the roof space, to see how hot it is. Try it first thing in the morning, then at lunchtime, and again late in the afternoon. The temperature will generally increase throughout the day and be hottest around 4pm in the afternoon.

The easy solution – Solar Roof Ventilators from Solazone

As we mentioned before the issue is with the air not being ventilated and thus creating a heat trap. What we suggest is having a ventilation system in your roof that allow the air to escape. This will release the hot heat thus you are cooling the roof naturally. Our Solar Roof Ventilators work by extracting the heat. The best thing is that as we are using the sun’s free energy to counteract the effect of the sun. it like the sun is a source of natural heat, which is simply energy. What you are now doing is harnessing that energy to keep your house cooler.
