Sun-Mar Compost Toilets

Sun-mar Composting Toilets

Sun-mar Excel

Canadian made, and one of the largest producers of composting toilets in the world. They have been producing waterless toilets for 30 years.

The Excel is certified as complying with Australian Standards 1546.2 and is approved in all states. The Excel has enough capacity that it can be used just about anywhere; in residences, cottages and even in light commercial applications.

The Excel is the best-selling unit in North America and for good reason. It is a high capacity Bio-drum toilet that is very simple to operate, features well proven technology and is extremely reliable. The Excel was the first ever self-contained composting toilet to be certified by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). So, when you purchase an Excel, you are literally purchasing a composting toilet that sets the standard.

To simulate residential use the Excel was tested by the National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) at maximum capacity for 6 continuous months, during which the Excel produced no odour and produced a clean, safe compost. Only Sun-Mar self-contained units are listed for residential and cottage use by NSF, whose Standard #41 is the toughest composting performance standard in the world.
The 2″ vent is attached at the top back of the Excel and can be installed invisibly by running it through the wall and up the outside wall. For comfort the Excel has a sturdy detachable footrest which can be removed to pull out the finishing drawer.
In normal use the Excel can normally evaporate all liquids, however a ½” emergency drain is fitted at the rear and this should be connected if the unit is to be used residentially or heavily, or if prolonged power outages are expected.

The Excel has a unique three chamber processing system including the patented Bio-drum. The exterior is made of fibreglass. The attractive high gloss white finish ensures it fits in well with other bathroom fittings and, unlike with competing products where the vent pipe exits the top of the unit inside the bathroom, the Excel vent is unseen. It exits from the rear of the unit.

The Excel is superior to other self-contained toilets because it uses a rotating drum to mix and aerate, rather than just a mixing bar or rake. The drum ensures optimum processing by providing the best composting conditions:

To accommodate the drum, the toilet is taller than a conventional toilet. A removable step is supplied. To reduce the apparent height of the toilet it can be installed in a 20mm cavity. There is a heater which further enhances the composting process and evaporates liquids. The 240 volt fan ventilation system ensures the system is odourless.

Sun-mar Excel NE

Sunmar NE showing exhaust flueExel NE is for where there is no reliable electric power. It has no heater fitted, and comes with optional 12 volt fan.

The success of the Excel design meant that a three chamber unit could be specifically designed for those with NO continuous 240 volt supply. First launched in 1981, the Excel NE has long been the standard toilet for those living off the grid. A 1998 redesign gave the unit a rounded look, and recessed the drum handle.

The Excel NE has no fan or heater. Odorless operation is achieved by a 4″ vent mounted at the top rear of the unit which acts like a chimney on a wood stove. For good air movement the vent should be installed vertically and to 2-3 feet above the peak of the roof.

The optional 12 volt fan should be installed if you need to install the toilet with any bends in the vent. No more than 2 x 45° bends are encouraged, even with the fan.

If the Excel NE is used residentially or heavily, or is in a place which is subject to downdraft, the 12 volt fan must be installed in the vent stack. This fan draws 1.9 watts and can be powered by a solar panel and 12 volt marine battery.
Evaporating capacity on the Excel NE is variable, so the 1″ drain at the rear should be connected to an approved drain pit, container, or other facility.

The optional 12 volt fan can be run from a transformer, a battery or a small solar panel. Because of the efficiency of the process, this is sometimes unnecessary, however because the composting process depends on adequate supply of fresh air, we always recommend installing and using the fan.

Excel NE is very popular in solar powered homes. The 4″ vent pipe exits from the top of the unit, and to assist with air flow, comes with a larger model venturi for the top.

It is very important that no elbows or restrictions be fitted to the vent pipe of this toilet.

Sun-mar Excel AC/DC

A standard 240v Excel with bigger, 25mm liquid drains at the rear, and dual (both 50 mm and 100 mm) vent stacks.

Excel AC/DC uses the regular 50mm vent when 240v power is available, and defaults to the 100mm vent when it is not. A 12 volt 1.4 watt fan is included for use in the 100 mm vent stack.

The Excel AC/DC is for those with generators operating over 12 hours per day, or for people that expect to have continuous 240 volt power available in the future.

The 25 mm overflow drain on the Excel AC / DC should be connected if the unit is being used in AC mode, and must always be connected if it is being used in the non-electric mode.

Sun-mar Compact

The Compact is an elegant low profile unit with the looks to complement any bathroom.

Sun-Mar engineers designed this low profile toilet by developing and patenting a new variable diameter Bio-drum which is small at the front and larger at the rear. To maintain the uninterrupted lines of the Compact, a patented Bio-drum handles recesses into the body of the unit to mix and aerate the compost.

The Compact differs from the Excel in that all three chambers are smaller, which makes the Compact ideally suited to light residential or light to medium cottage use. As with the Excel, a vent stack attaches to the rear of the Compact. An emergency drain at the rear offers protection against heavy or residential use, or prolonged power outage

Capacity: 1 – 2 people full-time

Dimensions: Height 724mm x Width 550mm x Depth 840mm

Sun-mar Mobile

Sun-mar Mobile comes with a 12 volt fan and heater for use when there is no 240 volt power available. A 12 volt fan with a filter is also included to remove odours via a 3” vent pipe. The fan filter consists of activated carbon and zeolite materials which scrub the air of fresh ammonia odours ensuring odour-free operation at deck or roof level.

The Excel Mobile vent pipe comes out of the top of the system which allows the toilet to sit flush against the wall of the toilet room thus conserving space. Along with speeding up the composting process and removing odours, the fan acts to evaporate all of the liquid waste produced. However, when at sea, or on the road, it may be necessary to connect the system to a small container or grey water tank to collect any liquid waste that fails to evaporate.

Due to possible violent motion, the finishing drawer of the Excel Mobile has been gasketed to ensure that no liquid can escape from the evaporating chamber. The air intakes have also been located higher up and ducted down to the evaporating chamber. Strong mounting brackets have also been fixed to the system to ensure that the toilet is firmly fixed to the floor and won’t tip over in rough conditions. A drum lock keeps the composting drum upright under all conditions.

Capacity is 1-2 on a permanent basis, and 3-4 people for weekend and vacation use.

Centrex Composting Toilet Systems

Centrex 2000 Waterless

The Centrex 2000 A/F is a split system waterless toilet which combines an attractive fibreglass pedestal with the advanced technology composting unit of the Excel’s patented Bio-drum. You get the look and feel of the warm white fibreglass pedestal and timber seat in your bathroom and the ultimate composting unit under the floor.

As all gardeners will testify, there is no better way to compost than to tumble the compost pile. The tumbling process creates ideal composting conditions by ensuring that adequate air and moisture reach all parts of the pile as well as ensuring the even distribution of the added bulking agents to create the necessary ratio of carbon to nitrogen in the nitrogen rich pile.

centrex 2000 composting toiletWith the Centrex there is no raking, shovelling or moving of chambers. You will only have to remove a small tray some 3 – 4 times per year. The contents of the full tray are dry, soil like and odourless. The full tray weighs less than 10 kgs.

The Centrex A/F meets the requirements of the Queensland EPA and is also approved in other states.

Included in the Centrex 2000 A/F package are:-

  • Fibreglass warm white pedestal and timber seat.
  • Composting chamber with Bio-drum.
  • Waste connecting chute (70 cm cut to suit)
  • Ventilation system including 240 volt fan and external vent pipes with diffuser.

Capacity: 4 – 6 persons full-time residential use, or 7 – 10 persons weekend and vacation use.

Centrex 3000 Waterless

The Centrex 3000 AF (Air Flow) is a continuous compost flow design for very heavy cottage or medium residential use. With a continuous flow system, rotation of the drum moves compost along the larger and longer 3000 series drum, before it drops automatically into the collection housing at the end of the unit. Under normal operating conditions the drum will not have to be turned backwards for emptying.

When used seasonally by up to 10 adults, compost will normally only need to be removed annually at the beginning of the following season.

The Centrex 3000 AF features a 370 watt 240 volt thermostatically controlled heater in a sealed compartment beneath the unit coupled with the standard Sun-Mar 30 watt turbo fan and 2″ vent stack.

In most parts of Australia the heater is not required to be used.

Centrex 3000 waterless toiletThe Centrex 3000 AF is designed for use with a locally-supplied dry pedestal (no flush). A pipe piece, 75cm in length and 25cm diameter, is supplied with the unit. The only restriction on installation is that the Dry Toilet needs to be directly above the unit so that there is a straight drop. This is long enough if the floor of the bathroom is up to 95cm above the surface that the composter is placed on. The pipe piece can be cut to size and additional pieces can be added if necessary.

All 3000 series units are supplied with a 1″ drain hose which should be connected to the 1″ drain at the bottom left of the unit. This particular model should be able to evaporate all liquids as long as the heater is on, and it is not being used heavily, so an overflow drain may not be necessary.

Capacity: 6 – 7 persons full-time residential use, or 9 – 11 persons weekend and vacation use.

Sun-mar pedestals

The Sun-mar Centrex toilets are supplied with locally-sourced fibreglass pedestals, to comply with local by-laws and safety legislation. For this reason, Sun-mar pedestals are not sold in Australia.

For information on our range of pedestals, click here.

Centrex 2000 Microflush

The Centrex 2000 is a split system one pint (half litre) flush composting toilet which can be installed such that the composting unit is not directly beneath the pedestal. An ultra low flush pedestal is supplied which is connected to the composting unit by a 75 mm pipe. The Centrex 2000 allows the installation of a split system toilet where there is only 1000 mm between the bathroom floor and the ground. In this case the composting unit would normally be located beside the house within 5 m of the pedestal. If the ground slopes away from the house to where the composting unit is to be located it may be possible to install a Centrex 2000 where the bathroom floor is on the slab.

The horizontally mounted composting drum provides optimum composting conditions with its tumbling action to aerate and mix the contents. The heater is ideal for colder climates and accelerates the composting process. Most, if not all, the liquid will evaporate, but a liquid drain outlet is provided for run off into a bath sized gravel pit. The final processing is completed in the finishing tray isolated from any fresh material. The finished earth like composted humus is odourless. It is removed only a few times a year and is normally used for soil enrichment. The Centrex 2000 is suitable for homes of up to and including five people. For larger homes there is the Centrex 3000.

The Centrex meets the requirements of the Queensland EPA, and has been submitted for approval in other states.

The Centrex is ideal for people who prefer the look of a conventional pedestal and who feel the need to flush after using the toilet. More than one pedestal can be connected to one composting unit

Included in the Centrex 2000 package are:-

  • Moulded resin white pedestal and white seat.
  • Composting chamber with Bio-drum.
  • Waste connecting chute .
  • Ventilation system including 240 volt fan and external vent pipes with diffuser.
  • Easy to follow installation and maintenance manual.

Capacity: 4 – 6 people in permanent use

Centrex 3000 Microflush

The Centrex 3000 AC/DC composting toilet system is a continuous “auto-flow” design for very heavy cottage or medium residential use. With a continuous flow system, rotation of the drum moves compost along the larger and longer Centrex 3000 series drum, before it drops automatically into the collection housing at the end of the unit. Under normal operating conditions the drum will not have to be turned backwards for emptying.

When used seasonally by up to 8 or 9 adults, compost will normally only need to be removed annually at the beginning of the following season.

The Centrex 3000 AC/DC features a 370 watt 120 volt

thermostatically controlled heater in a sealed compartment beneath the unit coupled with the standard Sun-Mar 30 watt turbo fan and 2″ vent stack. The heating system reduces the amount of effluent from the unit, and the fan removes any fresh odors, ensuring odor-free operation.

Capacity: 6 – 7 full – time residential, or 9 – 11 weekend and vacation use.

Sealand 1 Pint Flush Toilet

Sun-Mar offers a selection of 1 pint flush toilets for use with regular Centrex central composting toilet systems. More than one “1 pint flush” toilet can be installed with these units if necessary.

The constraint is the number of people using the system rather than the number of toilets.

Using about one pint per flush, these ultra low flush toilets provide all the advantages of a flush toilet while minimizing water usage. They are ideal for use with Sun-Mar Central Composting Systems, but can also be used with holding tanks, overloaded septic systems, and in RV’s

A simple foot pedal flush opens the water valve and gate when pushed down, and fills the bowl with water when lifted. After flushing, a small amount of water is held in the toilet bowl which is sealed by a self-cleaning ball valve and teflon seal. Even gravity-fed water from a roof tank is sufficient to flush a 1 pint flush toilet. In winter they can be flushed manually using a container if necessary.

The 1 pint flush toilet has a regular sized toilet seat.

In some instances extra height is needed to allow the toilet to gravity feed to the composting unit. Where this is the case, a 1 pint flush toilet is availabe in a low profile model with a 10″ seat height, can be mounted on a platform.
