Flat roof solar pool heating

How to install solar pool heating in a day.

Ths is a quick post just describing how we installed a new solar pool heating collector on a customer’s flat tin roof in a single day.

The product description can be found here: https://www.solazone.com.au/ultimateblue

Sizing the collector

After carefully measuring the roof and designing the solar collector dimensions, we ordered sufficient rolls of UltimateBlue solar pool heating tubing 10-tube strips to completely cover the roof.  The rolls come in 27m long rolls that need to be cut to measured lengths, (for up and back), as both the hot and cold manifolds are to be located on the same end of the roof.

Once the tubing strips were cut to length, the 10 tubes were spliced back about 75mm, and locking collars were fitted to each tube.  The manifold barbs were smeared with silicone adhesive, to make it easier to push the tubes completely on each barb.   The locking collars were then slid over the ends of the tubes to prevent any leaks.

The sub-assembled tubing strips were then laid out on the roof, side-by-side, and the luran manifolds were glued together with PVC solvent cement.

At this point it is important to note where the cold water inlet and hot water outlet are to be located.  Cold water enters into the bottom of the collector, and the heated water comes out from the top, in order to purge any air from the solar collector tubing.

The solar colector manifolds were then connected to the pool plumbing, and the remaining manifold ends capped off.

Whilst the pipework glue is curing, (about half an hour), the solar collector strips are arranged neatly on the roof, side-by-side so that the strips are straight and the solar tubing looks flat.

Next, was to start up the pump so the solar collector fills with water, and the tubing settles down flat.  At this stage the solar collector mat can be glued down to the ribs of the roof, leaving the roof waterways clear and unblocked.
